Located at Xinsi Village, Xicang Township, Luqu County, Gannan Prefecture, Gansu Province, the full name of Shitsang Monastery is “Shitsang Ganden Chokhorling”. Built in 1839 by the third Dewatsang Jamyang Tubten Nyima, who is one of the four Sertri of Labrang Monastery, Shitsang Monastery regards Dewatsang Living Buddha as the master and belongs to the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
Every year on the 14th of the first Chinese lular calendar month, a grand Dharma assembly and the tribe's "Treasure Show Festival" are held at Shitsang Monastery in Luqu County, which aims to revere nature and pray for good luck in the coming year.
Tribe's Treasure Show Festival at Shitsang Monastery is organized by one of twelve tribes, and the twelve tribes organize the festival one by one, and the one tribe who organized the festival will organize it again after twelve years. Wearing jewelry and holding a gun, a knife, the handsome young men selected by the tribe are full of vigor and take a stride to lead clansman to walk around the monastery, which shows their strength and charm, and recalls the time of the former Shangwu heroes (Shangwu means emphasizing military affairs). All able-bodied men of the tribes who organize the festival by turns must participate it. Dressed in luxuriant Tibetan costumes, they are walking with “God of War” and “show” treasures of their own tribes, besides, Tibetan men hold spear, colorful pray flags and banners in hand, which represents a majestic scene.
“God of War” is played by the strongest man of the tribe. He wears “general cap” on head that is like a cap of the army of King Gesar, Tibetan King in ancient time, gold earrings on ears, agate pearl necklace on neck, luxuriant Tibetan robe and cloth shoes with sharp corner, long Tibetan broadsword and delicate bow and arrow on waist, and is attended by crowd to walk slowly. The men behind the “God of War” throws “Longda” (Small piece of papers for religious sacrifices and prayers) all the time, they cheer and scream to celebrate.
All men of tribes dressed in luxuriant Tibetan costumes hold colorful pray flags and banners highly on the line, and parade with the treasures, “God of War”, of their own tribes. Like a holiday, Tibetan women wear Tibetan robes, pearls and agates to watch the event. Shitsang Monastery has been the center of religious events in the area, and Treasure Show Festival is not only satisfying the spiritual wish of pilgrimage and worship for masses of religious believers, but also a gorgeous religious and cultural landscape.
