In the Tibetan language, “Damg” means Damgxung and “Jiren” means a praying ceremony, so “Damg Jiren” is a praying ceremony for Damgxung. Actually, in the beginning, the ceremony is held for celebrating harvest, exchanging commodities and cultural entertainment activities. Afterwards, some Tibetan Buddhism characteristics and political content are involved in the festival.
The traditional Damg Jiren Horse Racing regarded horse long/middle/short distance running, horde walking race, shooting and picking up hada on the back of horse as its primary athletic activities. In recent years, with the development of society, many artistic and cultural activities were added to the festival, such as guozhuang dance, carrying stone, tug-of-war, yak race, costume program and so on.
The cultural entertainment activity of the Horse Race Festival is held from 10th to 12th of July and horse racing lasts three days. Participants are usually teenagers from 12 to 20 years old.
Another competition is archery, and its main participants are from different levels of the tribe. Everyone shoots three arrows and the target is one hundred meters away. The participants who shoot the target can be awarded 250 grams and a hada with good quality.
During the three days for horse race and archery, pastoralists, especially young men and women who wear their splendid attire after one year’s hard working, come to here to dancing, singing, pursuit of a partner, which exudes the festival’s happiness.
