Mask Dance (Cham) Festival during Summer Prayer at Tsurpu Monastery
A Nice Monastery Festival near Lhasa

Every 8th April of Tibetan calendar, a Tibetan Buddhist ritual about erecting prayer flag pole is held at Tsurpu Monastery, and the worshipers who come here for pilgrimage reaches 80 thousands.

It said that there are three prayer flag poles in the world, two of them are in China. One is Darchen prayer flag pole in Ali (Ngari) of Tibet, and the other one is in Tsurpu Monastery. The prayer flag is considered as a landmark of Tibetan Buddhism. Every year, there is a conventional ceremony about replacing the prayer flag and erecting prayer flag pole for longevity and health, carrying forward Buddha dharma, good fortune of whole year.

The ritual starts around 8 o'clock in the morning. At the first, the monks of the monastery pray for happiness and then make preparation for erecting prayer flag pole. After chanting, they take their proper place in the monastery, many of them are standing on the roof of prayer hall and others are standing around the lying prayer flag pole. They are pulling the ropes or holding the poles in their hands.

With the decree of a monk who stand on the roof of the hall for commanding, all monks, standing on three sides of the roof of the prayer hall, start to drag ropes. And other monks who stand around the prayer flag pole hold the flagstaff by pushing, carrying, or using rods with their strength. Finally, the huge prayer flag rises gradually.

After several rounds of slogans and efforts, the upturned prayer flag pole is erected slowly. When the prayer flag pole is about to be fully erected, slogan is gradually replaced by chanting, and the surrounding people begin to throw highland barley into the air and follow to chant scriptures.

After erecting the prayer flag pole and lighting incenses, people who sit near it stand up hurriedly, they begin to move stone to full of empty slots or water the sand that is placed at the bottom of the prayer flag pole to fix it. All of them try their best to make contribution to their faith.

Finally, the prayer flag pole is erected, and then they are in line with Hada in their hands. They hang their Hada on the prayer flag pole and meditate six-word mantra with lowering their heads.

During the "Saga Dawa Festival" from March 30th to April 15th of Tibetan calendar, not only the prayer ceremony, lasting one week, but also erecting prayer flag pole, dance with mask (Cham), unveiling Thangka with Buddha painting and other religious activities will be held in Tsurpu Monastery.
