When to go

Climate is not such a major consideration as many people might imagine when visiting Tibet. Certainly, winter is very cold and snowfalls can sometimes make travel differcult; but some travellers swear by the winter months.There are few travellers about at this time and Lhasa, for example, is at its most colourful.crowded with nomads.
Spring, early summer and late autumn are probably the best times to be in Tibet. From mid-July through to the end of September, the monsoon starts to effect parts of Tibet. September and October are considereed the best times.

What to bring

Bring as little as possible to Tibet. Lightweight and compact are two words that should be etched in your mind when you are deciding what to bring.

Clothes

In Tibet, no matter what time of year you are travelling, you should come prepared with some warm clothing.In the summer months, a couple of T-shirts and a good swearter or heading out to Western Tibet. At other times of the year, ideally you should have thermal underwear, a down jacket, gloves and even a balaclava to protect your ears.
Some clothing items can be bought in Lhasa or Shigatse, but the selection is limited and the quality poor. It is much better to come prepared. Good walking boots and heavy socks are essential. Items such as a wide-brimmed hat to keep off the sun can be bought in Lhasa very cheaply. Baseball caps are widely available but won't protect your ears. Shorts are not a very suitable option in Tibet.
A good pair of sunglasses are absolutely essential to block out the UV light and protectyour eyes.A compact umbrella is a versatile shelter from rain, sleet, snow and sun. Some pharmaceutical itema are hard to find, examples being shaving cream, decent razor blades, mosquito repellent, deodorant, dental floss, tampons and contact lens cleanning solution. Bring a supply of lip salve. Most traveller's lips start to crack within a few days of arriving in Tibet, and if untreated can become very painful. Instant hot drinks like coffee and soup are useful, as boiling water is available everywhere, water bottles are essential, try to get one that you can use to cool boiled water.
An alarm clock is essential for getting up on time to catch flights and buses. A strong torch is essential for viewing the inside of most monasteries.
