The relic sites of ancient Xiangxiong Kingdom
The relic sites of ancient Xiangxiong Kingdom

According to the legend of Bon religion, the capital of Xiangxiong Kingdom (called Yangtong in ancient Chinese records) was located at Qionglongyin, within the territory of present-day Tanda County of Ngari. On the Earth Holt with an area of about 50 square kilometers at Tanda, a number of cave sites and rock paintings of the earlier human beings have been discovered. A wealth of remaining sites at Qiongdzong, not far from the Wenbu Office of Nyima County, is also said to be the location of the ancient capital of Xiangxiong. Nearby Qiongdzong is Tangra Yumco, the most important Holy Lake of Bon religion. Built in a cavern on the cliff by the lake, the Yuben Monastery is believed to the oldest temple of Bon religion, and have been attracting a large number of pilgrims. Xiangxiong Kingdom believed Bon religion. The New Red Annals said the founder of Bon religion was Shenrab Miwo, the first king of Xiangxiong. Qiongdzong is located to the west of the middle section of ?? Mountain Ranges. Backing onto the mountain ranges and facing Tangra Yumco the holy lake, the terrain of the relic sites is steep and imposing and full of the momentum that a national capital should held. Strategically entrenched at a vantage point and covering an area of one square kilometer, the site is just like a stockaded fortress made of huge stones. Being close to the big lake, the grasslands nearby the site enjoy an advantageous microclimate, which brings about a rich rainfall and makes the lush pasture teeming with high-grade Kashmir goats. Here the tents of the herds of northern Tibet are visible now and then. Qiongdzong is about 20 kilometers away from Wenbu Office and is available to access by vehicle directly from Nyima County. Further textual research is needed regarding to whether the two places mentioned above are the capitals of Xiangxiong. Anyhow they have the common ground that both of them are within the reach of Xiangxiong’s powerful influence.
