Tangra Yumco is the holy lake of the Bon believers. Starting from Nyima County, driving southward for 8 kilometers and then turning left, keeping driving southward for 80 kilometers, crossing over a mountain pass of about 5,000 meters, you reach the Tangra Yumco lake basin.
The lake lies at the bottom of the deeply sank basin and is next to Dangqongtso Lake. Qongtso means lesser Tangra Yumco in Tibetan. In fact, the two lakes stand at the same lake basin and belong to the same lake before some parts of the lake dried up. The name of Dangqongtso just derives from the fact. It is said the lake color changes three times in one day. On the eastern bank of the lake the red cliff stands stretching and high, which records clearly the history that the lake surface descends time and time again. The stairs eroded by the lake water encircle the lake from the top of the cliff to the shore. The two lakes are 5 kilometers apart.
The sole-shaped Tangra Yumco stretches from north to south and is surrounded by mountains in three sides. On the eastern bank of the lake stand seven peaks of Daerguo Mountain. The seven peaks is black and cover with snow, resembling to seven Pyramids in order. Bon believers hold these peaks as well as the Lake in high esteem as the Holy Lands. Yuben Monastery in a cave built by the lake is said to be the most ancient monastery of Bon religion.. |
